Records indicate that the center offered a total of 90 beds—15 above the county’s average as of the opening quarter of 2026. On average, 83.9 residents received care at Lake Woods during this time.
The CMS gave Lake Woods Nursing & Rehabilitation Center an overall score of 3 out of 5, which trails the state average of 3.2 for Michigan’s nursing facilities.
Optalis Health & Rehabilitation of Whitehall was recorded as Muskegon County’s largest nursing home this quarter, with 125 beds. Second was Optalis Health & Rehabilitation of Muskegon, offering 107 beds.
By the start of Q1 2026, Lake Woods Nursing & Rehabilitation Center had incurred two fines totaling $67,541 and was assessed four penalties.
Across Muskegon County, Michigan, there were six for-profit nursing home providers overall.
Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows a continued rise in the number of older adults while younger population groups decline. From 2020 to 2024, the number of Americans age 65 and up increased by 13%, contrasted with a 1.7% drop among those under 18. The older adult demographic has grown sharply since the early 20th century, expanding from 4.9 million in 1920 to above 61 million in 2024.
Findings from a study in 2021 predict about 28 million in this group—close to half—may require long-term care or support, and over one-third could need nursing home assistance at some point.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
