In addition to voting for candidates for City Council and the North Muskegon School Board this November 8th, North Muskegon Public Schools will have a Headlee Override request to restore the non-homestead property tax rate to 18-mills. What does this mean?
1. This proposal does not impact the taxes on primary household properties. Primary households (homestead property) are exempt from this operating millage.
2. Even though primary households are not affected, state law requires a district-wide election to approve this millage.
3. This ballot proposal would restore the millage that our voters passed on August 4, 2020.
4. The District is restricted by Michigan law to levy no more than 18-mills. The 4-mills would requested would protect the School against future Headlee rollbacks for 9 years. The District must levy 18-mills on non-homestead property to receive full per pupil funding from the State.
5. Over the life of the millage (9 years), the total cumulative estimated impact would be approximately $104,000.
