City of Muskegon issued the following announcement on Feb 26.
Small Business Saturday: Drive by K.B. Market, 1431 S. Getty, and who would think that this humble convenience store was one of the largest suppliers of turkey knuckles in West Michigan.
K.B. Market is not unlike a few dozen convenience stores throughout the City of Muskegon but few have a fresh meat case with items such as turkey knuckles, chicken wings, steaks and hamburger. Turkey knuckles can be smoked, boiled, braised or barbequed and have become a soul food staple. Residents in the city’s Angell, Marsh Field, Oakview and Sheldon Park neighborhoods aren’t surprised by the meat counter in the market owned the past 26 years by Steve Boone, who says his business is a small grocery store for the neighbors. The store can sell thousands of pounds of knuckles during holidays, sourcing them from Indiana. Steve learned the meat business as a young man in Jackson before going into corporate restaurant positions prior to being a small business owner. At K.B.’s, most are repeat customers able to buy items for meals from all food categories, Steve said. K.B. Market – established in the 1930s as Scott’s Market and then was Swanson’s Market – also has beer, wine, soft drinks, snacks and lottery tickets like most convenience or “party” stores. COVID-19 actually was a boost for K.B. Market as people received stimulus checks and were forced to home cooking by the pandemic. With nine employees and an active owner, K.B. Market is open 364 days a year – closed on Christmas – with hours 9 a.m.-9 p.m. since COVID.
