Small Business Saturday: Los Amigos Tequila Bar & Grill

Small Business Saturday: Los Amigos Tequila Bar & Grill is more than just a Mexican restaurant for owner Ana Olson. The East Sherman Plaza favorite is a place to enjoy Mexican cuisine, experience Mexican culture and join a Mexican family atmosphere. The family aspect starts with Ana managing the front of the house and her brother and business partner Carlos Lopez running the back of the house. The two purchased Los Amigos in 2015 from out-of-town owners.

The restaurant was established in 2006 but the local ownership provides its own unique approach. Want dessert? How about a Popocatelpetl – a multi-chocolate cake – named after the active volcano in central Mexico. Los Amigos, 1848 E. Sherman, features 228 different Mexican tequilas, each offering a taste and story of Mexico. The menu has traditional tacos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas and special items like sopes – soft Mexican tortilla bowls filled with meat, cheese and veggies. The authentic links to Mexico come from Ana’s home in the Mexican state of Jalisco, where she lived until age 19, immigrating to Wisconsin.

She came to Muskegon to help her brother at the restaurant in 2013. In a post-COVID time, Los Amigos tries to help struggling families meet tight budgets with complete, affordable family meals that can be eaten in or taken home, Ana said. “For some it is a real treat to go out to eat and we want food and culture to bring families together,” she said.  Los Amigos employs 32 and is active in the community as Ana helps produce the Latino Festival each September in Hackley Park. She is raising two children with husband Jessie Olson, who is a Muskegon County employee but also works in the family business. Los Amigos is open Tuesday-Thursday 11 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sunday noon until 8 p.m. with a family buffet each Sunday from noon until 3 p.m.
