Recently passed auto insurance reforms will lead to more choices and lower rates for Michigan drivers, according to state Sen. Jon Bumstead (R-Muskegon).
The package, which passed with bipartisan support and was signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in late May, includes a number of changes to the state's auto insurance system. The new law gives Michigan drivers a choice of five options for auto coverage, from keeping the current unlimited lifetimes benefits to opting out of personal injury protection completely. Those who choose lower levels of PIP coverage should see significant savings.
Bumstead noted that the changes bring the state's auto insurance system in line with other forms of insurance.
"When purchasing any other type of insurance, you have options available based on your specific needs and what you can afford," Bumstead said in a post on his official website. "The no-fault system was so burdensome for hardworking Michigan families because they were only allowed to choose top-tier care that many of them couldn’t afford."
