Five new solar arrays are coming to Muskegon Heights in an effort to offset the city's annual energy costs, according to project manager Chart House Energy of Muskegon.
The energy company said in a news release that the goal is to offset as much as 47% of the city's yearly cost of energy, which could come to more than $100,000 in annual savings.
The solar arrays will be on city property in five locations: City Hall, the Water Filtration Plant, the Muskegon Heights Department of Public Works and the Pumping Station. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of June, at which point the arrays should be fully operational.
The arrays open up some job opportunities for locals, according to Chart House. The company said that area individuals will be hired and trained to build the arrays and, once construction is complete, the company will also assist them in finding permanent work.
