City of Muskegon issued the following announcement on Dec 4.
Small Business Saturday: Kathryn Younts learned to sew as a young child at the encouragement of her father who wanted all of his children to have a productive skill.
Kathy has been a seamstress for 42 years and a City of Muskegon business owner for the last 18. Kathy’s Sewing and Alteration has been a mainstay at 1095 W. Laketon at the corner of Barclay since she purchased the building to open her business. Once a famed Meier Cleaners outlet, Kathy (Wisneski) and husband Mark Younts have completely refurbished the inside and done amazing renovations to the exterior.
Kathy began in the business as a tailor at an upscale Grand Rapids men’s store and worked a string of part-time sewing jobs in Muskegon before starting her own business. Kathy’s Sewing has become more than just a clothing alteration and repair business as she has gone into the repair of everything from tents to golf bags and boat covers.
She also has done alterations and repairs of public safety uniforms, servicing police and fire departments in Muskegon, Norton Shores and Roosevelt Park to name a few. But her steady year-round business is stressed by proms, weddings and hunting season. Who would have guessed that hunters need clothing and equipment repairs in the hours before Opening Day? Kathy’s Sewing is open to the public Tuesday through Friday noon to 6 p.m., but the one-seamstress shop since COVID-19 accounts for 75 hours or more of her time each week.
The City of Muskegon’s Development Services Division highlights the city’s small businesses on Saturday mornings.
