There were 3,353 students enrolled in Public Schools of the City of Muskegon in the 2022-23 school year, 3.6% less than the previous year, according to the Michigan Department of Education.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2022-23 school year, 50.6% of them were boys, and 49.4% were girls.

Data also shows that most of the students were African American, representing 57.0% of the Public Schools of the City of Muskegon total enrollment.

Public Schools of the City of Muskegon covers seven schools within Muskegon County with its main office in Muskegon. Among them, Muskegon High School recorded the highest enrollment of 1,039 students in the 2022-23 school year.

Overall student enrollment in Michigan remains below pre-pandemic levels, white students experiencing the largest decline at 6.5%.

Academic performance has also suffered, with the state's average NAEP score dropping by 6.5 points and ethnic achievement gaps widening. Black and Hispanic students' average math proficiency dropped by 7% in 2022, to 13.5% and 28.2%, respectively.
