State Representative Greg VanWoerkom (R-Norton Shores) has expressed his satisfaction over the inclusion of funding for the second phase of the Rosy Mound acquisition in the state budget proposal. This investment is among several projects recommended by the Natural Resources Trust Fund (NRTF) Board in December. The NRTF, funded by money from the development of minerals on state land and not tax dollars, partners with local governments annually to allocate these funds.

If approved, Ottawa County would receive $1,642,000 towards a $2,346,000 purchase of 127 acres of dunes northeast of the existing 164-acre Rosy Mound Natural Area. This would result in a 291-acre park on Lake Michigan. The park, known for its stunning lake and dune views, forested trails, and 3,460 feet of natural beach includes 116 acres of state-designated critical dunes.

"We’re so blessed to live near beautiful Lake Michigan and the dunes that surround it," said VanWoerkom. "Everyone deserves to experience the natural wonders of our area, and with the completion of this project, they will. I am pleased to see funding for our community included in the NRTF budget."

The funding is contained within Senate Bill 817.
