State Representative Greg VanWoerkom and his Republican colleagues have decided not to vote on any further bills until House Democrats address the concerns of tipped restaurant servers and bartenders, as well as amend a complicated sick leave law. This decision comes after Democrats prioritized other legislative matters during a session on December 13.

VanWoerkom emphasized the need for action, stating, “Michigan families and small businesses can’t afford for Democrats to keep ignoring the real challenges they’re facing.” He highlighted that Republicans are prepared to provide solutions but require cooperation from Democrats to proceed with voting.

The decision to abstain from voting was described by VanWoerkom as a last resort. “When we’re locked out of the conversation, we’re left with no other option,” he said, underscoring their intent to bring attention to issues affecting workers and small business owners in Michigan.

Without intervention, the hospitality industry may face significant layoffs and closures in early 2025. Businesses will also have to adapt to new sick time mandates that could affect existing paid time off policies. However, Democrats have been focusing on different priorities such as criminal justice reforms and fee increases across the state.

VanWoerkom, who owns a restaurant himself, expressed concern over potential impacts on workers and businesses due to these changes. He mentioned hearing from numerous local business owners worried about layoffs and losing the tipping system that benefits employees financially.

A survey by the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association indicates severe outcomes if recent legal changes remain: 66% of restaurant owners might lay off staff, 20% could close down, 42% would reduce hours, and over 92% expect price hikes by up to 25%. Another survey showed strong support among servers for retaining tips; 82% favored keeping tips while 79% feared job loss without tip credit.
