A resolution proposed by State Representative Greg VanWoerkom was approved by the Michigan House, urging Illinois Governor JB Pritzker to advance the Brandon Road Interbasin Project. The project aims to prevent Asian carp from spreading into the Great Lakes. Concerns about federal funding availability led Pritzker to delay the first phase of construction in February. President Donald Trump has expressed support for protecting Lake Michigan from these invasive fish, emphasizing the economic and environmental consequences of postponing action.
VanWoerkom stated, "Asian carp are not waiting on news of federal funding or basing their movements on what state leaders decide to budget. They are moving closer to the Great Lakes with every passing day." He highlighted Michigan's investment of over $73 million in the project and called for Illinois and Governor Pritzker to fulfill their commitments. "We can’t afford more political hesitation or posturing. We need action," VanWoerkom added.
The intergovernmental agreement between Michigan and Illinois was finalized in 2020 to support the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in designing the Brandon Road project. This plan includes technologies like electric barriers, underwater sound, bubble curtains, and a flushing lock to prevent Asian carp from reaching Lake Michigan while allowing commercial navigation through the Chicago Area Waterway System.
Asian carp have been documented as close as 47 miles from Lake Michigan. These fish reproduce rapidly, consume large amounts of organisms at the base of the food chain, and outcompete native fish populations. If they reach the Great Lakes, Michigan’s $7 billion fishing and tourism industry could face significant risks.
"The Brandon Road project is the most effective plan we have to stop this from happening," said VanWoerkom. He stressed that successful implementation requires commitment from all parties involved: "This resolution sends a very clear message to Gov. Pritzker: stop kicking the can on Brandon Road."
