Opportunities to Serve Your Community

The City Council is comprised of nine Council members and the Mayor who are responsible for all legislative action of the City. Members are elected on odd years to 4-year terms. Vacancies that occur mid-term for the position of Mayor are filled by the Mayor Pro Tem and for the position of Council Member are filled by a majority vote of the remaining members. Regular meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday and work sessions on the 4th Tuesday each month.

The Planning Commission is comprised of nine members who are integral in developing land use master plans of the City and ensuring that new projects follow the directives of those plans. The Commission primarily acts as an advisory board to the City Council in land use and development in the community. Commissioners are residents of the City appointed by the Mayor to serve 3-year terms. Each year one member of the body is selected as Chair and one as Vice Chair. Regular meetings are scheduled at 5:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month and held as needed.

The Zoning Board of Appeals is comprised of seven members who hear and decide appeals of adopted Zoning ordinances. Members are residents of the City appointed by the Mayor to serve 3-year terms. Regular meetings are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month and held as needed.  

The Economic Development Corporation/Tax Increment Finance Authority/Brownfield Redevelopment Authority Board is comprised of nine members whose mission is to promote economic development within the city by assisting businesses to become established and continue growth. Members are appointed by the Mayor to 6-year terms. Meetings are scheduled and held on an as-needed basis.

The Board of Review is comprised of two Council members selected at the bi-annual City Council Organizational Meeting and three residents appointed by the Mayor to serve indefinite terms. The Board, along with input of the City’s Finance Director and Assessor, hear and decide tax appeals of property owners. Multiple meetings are held in the beginning of March each year to hear appeals and throughout the year as mandated by State law and as necessary in the conduct of tax appeals.

The Building Code Board of Appeals is comprised of not less than three nor more than seven members appointed by the Mayor to serve 2-year terms. The Board will hear and render a decision on appeals of the enforcing agent of the Building Code. Meetings are held on an as-needed basis.

The Fire Code Board of Appeals is comprised of five qualified members of the State nominated by the fire code official or Mayor and confirmed by the City Council for 4-year terms. The Board shall hear appeals of the Fire Code. Meetings are held on an as-needed basis.

The Election Commission is comprised of the City Clerk and two registered electors of the City appointed by the Mayor for indefinite terms. The Commission approves election preparation and administration procedures for the lawful conduct of State, Federal and local elections. Meetings are held prior to all elections and on an as-needed basis.

The Personnel Board is comprised of one employee and one Council member for 2-year terms and one citizen of the City appointed by the Mayor for an indefinite term. The Board hears appeals of employees suspended or terminated and makes recommendation of findings to the City Administrator and Mayor on an as-needed basis.
